Modern Day: "Witch Hunts"
Witch hunts continue to happen today. Even though any rational person would be able to realize that accusing a normal person of being a witch is ridiculous, some people still don't understand that, to this day. There have been some serious incidents that have happened very recently. One of these events occurred in the village of Paiala in Papua New Guinea.
In this corrupt village on February 8, 2013, a young mother was accused of using sorcery to murder a neighbor's six-year-old son. Kepari Leniata is dragged from her hut and tortured her until she admitted that she killed the little boy with sorcery. The 20-year-old was then forced onto a pile of tires that were set on fire and she burned to her desth. The police that were at the location during the event were outnumbered and unable to prevent the event from occurring.
Not so long ago, women in India were accused of being witches. One woman named Nunu Devi, who was 70 yeard old, was accused of causing two of her neighbors of falling ill and becoming disabled. The villagers asked her to cure them and Nunu told them that she couldn't. The villagers then accused her of being a witch and they beat her with sticks. The police arrived shortly after and charged five people. All of them escaped before the police could fully capture them and they are on the run.
In the laft fifteen years, over 2,500 women have been killed due to others accusing them of being witches. Some countries passed a law in 1999 that was called the Prevention of Witch Hunting Act. This law stated that people were unable to accuse others of using black magic(witchcraft), sorcery, or being a witch. Other countries, such as Africa and India, still allow witch hunts to happen and they cause a lot of unneccisary deaths. A lot of women are protesting in these countries that the government needs to pass a law that prohibits witch hunts.

The Red Scare
After World War II came to a close, the Red Scare began to take place. Everyone in America was afraid of Communists and other people with different beliefs. During the time of the Red Scare, communists were reffered to as "Reds" because of their loyalty to Russia. Since the Cold War was in progress at this time, the Reds were not trusted. They presented a threat to America's security due to the fact that they could be spies for the Soviet Union.
Many people were accused of being communist during this time. These people were then brought to be questioned by government officials. If they were deemed to be communist they were, usually, fired from their jobs. A lot of actors and actresses careers were ruined during the Red Scare.
