The Salem Witch Trials: Overview
We find this topic very intriguing. The tragedies that took place in the little town of Salem were unbelievable. Everything began when witchcraft became illegal. Soon after, a laundress named Goody Glover was accused of bewitching the Goodwin children. It started with Martha Goodwin, at the age of 13, who started to show strange behaviors. Her three younger siblings began to exhibit this behavior a little while later. Glover was then arrested and hanged.
Four years after the incident, many Salem girls began acting strangely. The local doctor, Doctor Griggs, made the assumption that the behaviors had been caused by witchcraft. Elizabeth Parris, only at the age of 9, was one of the people afflicted. People such as the ministers and townspeople pressured her into telling them who inflicted this behavior upon her. She told them that it was Tituba. The other Salem girls identify Sarah Good, and Sarah Osborne soon after. All three of these girls who were accused were arrested. Tituba admitted to using witchcraft and told them that Good and Osborne assisted her.
The accusations continue in this little town of Salem and many deaths are the result of it. Some of them might have been guilty but others could have been innocent. The year of 1692 was the worst. The first death was caused in 1688 and four years later, in 1692, there were continuous accusations and many deaths.
